Pulse!! Computer Medical Training
BusinessWeek online reports that Claudia Johnston, a PhD in nursing from Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi, developed this virtual, clinical-training tool for medical and nursing students that compares to shooter video games. Johnston realized the experience of playing high-tension games is similar to the skills needed in the life-and-death atmosphere of a hospital.
Pulse!! is funded by the Office of Naval Research and is designed by BreakAway, the developer who has made simulations for emergency response teams. The movements of the 3-D characters were motion-captured using real-lfe medical staff and medical students. Students playing the platform will assume the role of the health-care provider and interact with the patient. The BreakAway team is working on depicting facial expressions like pain.
Pulse!! will be the most complex, game-influenced medical-training to date when the prototype is released by the end of 2006.
