Cell phones and cancer
Researchers from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute reported that ten or more years of analog cell phone use raised the risk of developing acoustic neuromas, a benign nerve tumor. Because most of today’s phones are digital, it is impossible to know whether they pose a similar risk. The recommendation is that children under the age of 8 not use cell phones and that children between 9 and 14 use them only when it’s essential. We may see something harmful 20 years down the road from all of the current cell phone usage. A UCLA neurosurgeon reports that she uses a cell phone herself but keeps the conversations short.

Long-term use of OTC painkillers
In a study that raised questions about long-term use of over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers such as Advil, Motrin and Aleve, researchers came across an unexpected result: although these drugs did cut the development of oral cancer by half, those positive results were superceded by an increased risk of dying from heart disease. Patients who smoke and took OTC painkillers for a minimum of six months doubled their chances of dying from: stroke, heart attack, and other heart-related problems. Bottom line: over-the-counter medications are not safer than prescription-only medications. Use with the same caution.

Menstrual cramps
The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports that Chamomile tea may ease the pain of menstrual cramps. Best to begin with organic tea 2 – 3 cups a day for relief.
